Top Seven Bathtubs of 2014

By Alan Knight

Someone wrote, “If Rosa Parks had taken a poll before she sat down in that bus, she would still be standing."  A poll is nothing more than the opinion of a group of people, however it does identify what issues people hold as being important to them.  The larger the polling number, the greater the evidence of something worthy of notice.  A poll from last year revealed the public’s favorite bathtub choices.  Here are the top seven:

#7:  The Traditional Roll Top Tub

About a 120 ago, there were quite a few foundries in the U.S. manufacturing bathtubs.  In general, these were known as Clawfoot tubs.  This was because the tubs’ removable legs were in the shape of animal feet or paws.  There were bear claws, lion claws, and even ostrich claws.  The tubs and legs were made of cast iron.  At the foundries, tubs were overlaid with thick, stylish porcelain.  This ceramic substance had a shine and feel that was extremely popular and remains so today.   These particular tubs had a rolled rim that gave them their second name of “rolled rim” tubs.  Today, these tubs are still fashionable.  Most of the modern ones, however, have the faucet holes drilled on the top rim of the tub (to enhance interior space) instead of inside the tub like the original ones.

# 6: The Pedestal Tub

This model sits atop a cast iron skirt or ring instead of legs.  It gives the tub more of a contemporary look, especially for those who find animal legs not to their liking.  There is usually a cut-out in the rear of the tub for plumbing purposes.  The pedestal base can be found on just about every shape and style of tub created.  It was an alternative that seemed to be favored by the aristocracy throughout the ages. For example, some of the former kings of Europe and the Middle East had their tubs mounted on to raised bases.  This “royal” preference is in vogue even today for its majestic, sophisticated look.

# 5:  The Dual- or Double-Ended

Unlike the traditional rolled rim, this tub has a raised slope at each end of the tub.  The drain is also centered, instead of being on the end.  This allows a person to sit on either end of the tub, facing in either direction.  It also creates symmetry and balance.  If the tub is going to be placed under a window or painting, this style is perfect.  This tub comes with chrome, brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze legs, as well as the pedestal base.

# 4:  The Double Slipper

Imagine a 72- inch tub with a majestic slope on each end and room for two people … that’s the Double Slipper.  It requires that you have enough space in your bathroom.  While it does take up some additional space in one’s bathroom, it goes a long way in helping to glamorize the room.  Like the Dual-Ended model above, this design is another one that is perfectly symmetrical.  With its ostensibly aristocratic look, it can become the focal point of any bathroom.  Believe me, once installed, everyone will take notice.  This tub is both regal and romantic.  One version of the Double Slipper is a hybrid of the Dual-Ended, only the Double Slipper has a slope that’s not so pronounced on each end.

# 3:  The Slight Slipper

This tub is also 72 inches in length, but the sloped ends of the tub are not as pronounced.  Think of this model as being a cross between the Dual-Ended and Double Slipper.  The poll showed that this was the preferred model over the Double Slipper by a narrow margin, citing it was a matter of comfort.  Participants commented that when reclining, the back of this tub was more comfortable because it “fit” the body better.

# 2:  The Slipper Tub

We’ve all seen them with their high, sloping backs at one end of the tub.  The traditional Slipper tub has been in movies (see our previous blogs “Famous Bathtubs in the Movies,” and “Romantic Movies That Featured a Porcelain Clawfoot or Pedestal Bathtub Scene,”) and have also been use throughout history as the baths of royalty.  The main reason people love them is their sensuous look.  One writer stated, “they are sexy and revealing.  That’s why the movie industry loves them so much.”  The tub comes in two different sizes: 57 and 67 inches.

 # 1:  The Walk-in Tub

Now, this tub is different than the aforementioned cast iron, porcelain tubs. It’s built differently, it looks completely different, and it serves different purposes. The cast iron and porcelain tubs are predominately focused on style and aesthetics, although they are perfect for soaking in warm water and relaxing.  The more modern invention of the Walk-in Tub is more utilitarian. It serves two main purposes:

A. It’s designed for those who have trouble getting into and out of a normal bathtub.  This is where its safety features come in.  The tub is free standing with six hidden legs with levelers.  It’s a tall 40 inches from the floor, but the threshold for entering is a mere six inches from the floor, facilitating safe and easy access in and out of the tub.  It has a door that opens to the inside and is sealed to make it water tight.  The floor and seat are slip-resistant and it comes with an added interior grab bar for balance and support.  Everything about this tub addresses the issue of safety.  No high lifting of the legs required to get into or out of the tub. All controls are within easy reach, there is a specially contoured seat for sitting while bathing, and there support rails for balance and maneuverability.

B. The other function of the Walk-in tub is hydrotherapeutic.  The tub can come with air jet hydrotherapy for treating many physical ailments and water jets for a soothing massage action.  You can also choose the inline heater, which makes the water stay warm longer for a more relaxing bathing/hydrotherapeutic experience.
The Walk-in Tub comes in different sizes to fit each person and the space where it will be placed.  The 54-inch length is perfect for those who need a little extra room inside the tub (its width is 30 inches).  The 48-inch model is perfect for smaller frames, and fits easier into smaller sized bathrooms.

While the Walk-in Tub may not be as pleasing to the eye as the Slipper Tub, it definitely is a crowd favorite.  The poll made it the number one choice of bathtubs in 2014.

In this article, I shared the poll results and described the most popular bathtubs of 2014.  These included the Roll Top, Pedestal Dual-Ended, Double Slipper, Slight Slipper, Slipper, and Walk-in tubs.

How to Create a Glamorous Bathroom

By Kerry Knight

You've seen them in the movies and on the real estate channel when they feature the beautiful homes. All the designer magazines showcase them and, of course, the do-it-yourself, flip-that-house type TV shows mention them as well. I’m talking about the centerpiece of any bathroom: the bathtub. The bathtub can make any bathro
om glamorous and beautiful.

There are many home improvement TV shows today that cover every decor
ating idea, from planting scrubs to installing kitchen cabinets. Millions of do-it-yourselfers (myself included) watch them and then pack into stores like Lowe's and Home Depot every weekend to buy supplies — all in our quest to become a custom designer. Then we invite friends and family over to see just how talented we are.

In the bathroom, there are many areas where we can get creative. How about beautiful tile floors or fresh paint?  Or a skylight or glass block window?
However, if you neglect the real focal point of the bathroom, the bathtub, you’re missing the mark. The old style, 60-inch, slide-in metal tub, and the one piece shower surround, are both dated. Plus, they don't really show off anything or catch one’s eye in the bathroom. Strictly utilitarian.

Think about taking out your old battle-worn bathtub and replacing it with a real show piece. For example, a Double Slipper Tub, resting just below a huge picture window, or overlooking a panoramic view of the landscape outside. Imagine how peaceful and relaxing your bath time would be. These gorgeous tubs will make your bathroom a real focal point in your home. Consider having the outside of the tub painted in your choice of color, like candy apple red or midnight blue.  The tub’s legs also come in an assortment of metallic finishes, such as chrome, oil rubbed bronze, white or brushed nickel. Imagine how beautiful your bathroom will be. Even more, imagine the serenity of bathing in that beautiful tub!

The free-standing Slipper Tubs tub don't require an abutment against the wall, where it’s lost or hidden. It can stand in right smack in the middle of the bathroom if you want. All that’s required is a little extension of your existing plumbing.  And if there's room in the floor for water lines and drainage, it's not that difficult to manage.

Or, consider adding free-standing water supply lines that come out of the floor and drape over the edge of the tub, where a gorgeous brushed nickel faucet hangs with porcelain hot and cold caps inserted inside the cross point handles. Then add the English “telephone faucet,” which has the hand held shower sprayer. Now you really have a touch of class.

There are other exotic porcelain tubs, if you prefer, like the Single Slipper, which comes in various sizes, or the traditional Roll Top or Dual Ended Tub. Everyone has his or her own personal taste and needs. I suggest you visit a showroom like the one at Tub King, so you can see firsthand the beauty and elegance of the tubs. You’ll get a real sense of the look and feel, and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with one of these tubs.

While you're at it, think about taking out the old bath sink and replacing it with something Victorian-looking, like a pedestal or console sink. They come in many sizes and designs, but they all take you back to times when bathing was something truly special.

Now you're ready to consider the finishing touches of live plants, wall hangings and color. Add Victorian trim to the entryway, floorboards, windows and ceilings and finally, update the bathroom door to a multi-panel one to complete the look.
Remember, your new bathtub is the center piece. Once in place, everything else follows. When finished, your bathroom will not only be something you're proud of, it’s a functional sanctuary you can escape to wash the stress of the day away.

In this article, I have discussed how the bathtub is the center of focus in most designer bathrooms. These usually have Claw Foot Tubs, or a Slipper or Double Slipper Claw Foot Tub. Some will showcase the Roll Rope Claw Foot as the center of attention. Either way, using a claw foot tub is an easy way to add beauty and elegance to any bathroom. That’s why you see them in so many movies and in the homes of the stars.

The Cinderella Slippper Tub

By Kerry Knight

Everyone remembers the Disney classic, "Cinderella."  As she rushes from the Ball, as midnight approaches, she loses her slipper.  The Prince will eventually find her, but only after he puts that slipper onto her foot for the perfect fit.

There is a deep soaking bathtub that has been appropriately named, the Slipper Tub.  One end of the tub has a very tall, and pronounced slope, thus resembling a slipper.  The sloped end is 29 inches from the floor to the top of the rim.  The opposite end is 21 inches tall.  The faucet is located on the side of the rolled top, so that one can conveniently control the water  flow.

The slipper tubs are made of cast iron with bright, white,
porcelain glass  covering the interior.
The Slipper comes in several sizes.  All tubs are measured from outside rim to outside rim.  The width is a consistent 30 inches.

The 57 inch slipper would be appropriate for the petite body.   The 61 inch Slipper is for the average frame.  The 67 inch would be more for the taller person.

The Slipper comes with majestic metal legs, ornately designed.  They are available in chrome, brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze, or a color of choice.

The Slipper can be accented with a color on the outside the tub, other than white.   Popular colors have been candy apple red, midnight black, and buttery cream.

The Slipper tub often comes with a tub caddy, which is a metal tray that reaches across the width of the tub.  This is the ideal place for the glass of wine or your favorite book.

The Slipper tub has appeared in more movies than any other style of tub.  It will forever be known as the sexy tub or the glamour tub.

Another variation of the Slipper is the "Double Slipper."
This one has the tall slope on each end of the tub.  It reaches 72 inches in length and can be the tub of choice for a couple wishing to bathe  together.  It is a monster in size and a real beauty to behold.  The dual symmetry of the tub makes it a perfect choice to be centered  at a large decorative window in the bath.  The ornate legs that support it are even larger than normal, and also can be purchased in chrome, brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze or a color of choice.

The Slight Slipper also has the high back on each end without such a pronounced  slope.  Some find this one to be even more comfortable.  It is 71 inches long by comparison for the back.

And we all know, it's not just the beauty of these tubs that attract us.  It's also the comfort and relaxation that it offers, when you fill these deep tubs with warm water, place the towel at the nap of your  neck, close  your eyes, and forget about the day's drudgery.

In this article, I have discussed the Slipper tubs and its other variants, the Slight Slipper and the Double Slipper. I  discussed all the benefits, the dimension and the varieties for this glamorous tub. Because this tub has been featured in so many movies, it is always remembers as a sexy and glamorous tub to bath in. This tub is so beautiful that people sometimes forget how relaxing and comfortable this tub is in use. If you found this article to be useful please pass it on to your friends. Leave a comment or tell us your slipper tub story in the comment section (PG only) below. It has been my pleasure sharing this information with you. Thanks again for sharing this journey together.

Until next time keep smiling.
